My photograph of the month for June 2015 is of one of the Moeraki boulders on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The Moeraki boulders have become an iconic location for photographers visiting New Zealand and the area is now one of the most popular locations for landscape photography in the South Island. These oft photographed spherical boulders present a real challenge if you want to try and create something different and unique. This photograph was taken during my 2015 Masterclass workshop (trip report coming soon) and was the result of focusing my efforts on a single boulder that was surrounded by a pool of water at low tide.

What a unique view – its so “other worldly” – looks like a meteor just ‘dropped in’ – wonderful shot.

I immediately thought pupil, iris, thereby nature,s view of her own sky. Feel selfish hoping to be #1…New Zealand/Australia are my missing continents, and this would be a steady reminder of the beauty I’ve yet to visit.

I love this image as it leaves a great deal to the imagination. It reminds me of the film Time Bandits when the giant emerges from the ocean. This could be the top of a submerged head. Kinda scary thinking about that. Also love the colours and the detail.

Oh my gosh. I had never heard of these before your blog. I had to do some research and now I think if/when I ever get to New Zealand I will make it a point to check them out. Thank you and now I’m wondering what other things are waiting for me there.
I find this image interesting, to me it appears the boulder looks like the pupil of an eye protected by the water, when in fact its the water that shapes it. Love the colours. I may have to think seriously about doing a workshop in New Zealand, start planning.
