Gura Gear Pro Team Behind the Shot – Antarctica Penguins

As part of their new online Journal Gura Gear have just posted a Behind the Shot story of one of my favourite photographs from Antarctica. Read the full story HERE. There is also an extended conversation with more background information HERE.

In this week’s entry, we’re sitting down with Pro Team photographer Joshua Holko to discuss the background on this stunning image of penguins in Antarctica. We’ll delve into his thought process, gear and tips for aspiring wildlife photographers

I’m quite struck by this photograph of penguins. They’re marching along in the foreground and make up a very tiny portion of the frame. It looks like they’re on this journey and yet everything around them is moving and massive giving this real sense of scale to everything.

That sense of scale that you touched on is really really important when photographing wildlife in their environment especially with something so small like a penguin. Also, if you’ve got the opportunity to show it in the environment and put the animal in context and provide scale, then I think it really elevates the photograph to a higher level. Photo of the Month September 2020 – Full Speed

The photograph of the month for September 2020 comes from one of my winter snow mobile expeditions to Svalbard to photograph Polar Bear on the frozen sea ice. This large male Polar Bear is at full speed on the ice at Monbukta as it chases after a nearby female. Capable of explosive bursts of speed covering around 100 metres in just seven seconds the Polar Bear is the only living marine mammal with powerful, large limbs and feet that allow them to cover kilometres on foot and run on land.

Greenland Arctic Expedition Feedback

Just wanted to share some wonderful feedback I received this morning regarding one of my previous Greenland expeditions.

Had a terrific time on this trip – enjoyed every single minute. The greenlandic landscape/ icescape is everything I hoped for and more. Enjoyed the geographic isolation. Good mix of locations and shooting from ship, zodiac and shore. Met some great people. Josh was a great host – so I’m anxious to join several of his other Arctic trips in the near future. Jerry.

You can read the trip report fromt his expedition HERE. You can also check out the Spark presentation on Greenland HERE.

I will soon be announcing a new expedition into Kaiser Franz Josef on the East Coast of Greenland in August of 2023. Stand by for further details and information on this new expedition that will take us deep inside the rarely visited National Park region of East Greenland.
