Remembering Bears Exhibition 2022 Now Live

The eight bear species in the world roam from ice sheets to forests, meadows to mountains. In this exhibition of images from the Remembering Bears book, in which I am a proud contributor, we aim to shine a spotlight on their diversity and beauty, their resilience and fortitude and most importantly, to raise funds for those working to protect them. We are supported in this mission once again by many of the world’s top wildlife photographers, who have all generously donated their work. Together, we are determined to stand up for bears and penetrate the moral consciousness of all those who would exploit or see them destroyed. Because the planet would be poorer without them. By buying (or bidding for) any print from this exhibition, or indeed buying a book you are helping us all to secure their future in the wild.

You can now marvel at all of the stunning images from this much-anticipated new fundraising book at https://bit.ly/Remembering-Bears-Exhibition. Here, for the next two weeks only, many pictures from the book are either on sale or up for auction.

The pioneering Remembering Wildlife series was launched in 2016 when more than 50 of the world’s best wildlife photographers came together for an unprecedented collaboration to raise funds for conservation via the book Remembering Elephants. Since then, their numbers have grown and more than 230 different photographers have donated their work to the much-lauded book series which has attracted celebrity endorsement from the likes of Ricky Gervais, Russell Crowe, Michelle Pfeiffer and Pierce Brosnan. So far, the series – comprising books on elephants, rhinos, great apes, lions, cheetahs, African Wild Dogs and now bears – has raised more than £952,000 / $1.25m USD USD for 58 conservation projects in 24 countries across Africa and Asia and sold more than 33,000 copies. I am proud to be a contributor.

Wild Wolves of the Taiga Forest Announcement 2023

By popular demand, I will again be offering my Wild Wolves of the Taiga forest workshop in September of 2023. The workshop is dedicated to the photography of Wolves, Brown Bears, and Wolverine, as well as Golden and White-tailed eagles and other Sub-Arctic bird species including Siberian Jays and Woodpeckers.

The workshop will run for 9 days / 8 nights from September 10th until September 18th, 2023. This workshop is a direct result of the successful October 2021 trip (Read the Trip Report) that saw us photograph wolves every day of the trip; as well as brown bears and more. Tomorrow, I will be making my way north for the 2022 trip – trip report to follow.

This workshop is for wildlife photographers who want to capture photographs of wild wolves in their natural environment of the Taiga forest during late Autumn. In order to photograph the wolves, we will be using a number of different hides that are situated on the Finnish border. We will be based in nearby cabins with individual private rooms that are a short drive away. The cabins are homely and have wifi and all other modern facilities. During the workshop, we will also have a chef prepare our meals.

Our days will be spent photographing the wildlife from our hides. A typical day will see us in the hides around 11am and finish around 5pm (ish) when darkness descends. Evening review and critique sessions are then on demand.

The workshop is strictly limited to no more than six photographers (some places already spoken for). Please drop me an email if you would like to register your interest or would like additional information. To get an idea of the sort of photographs you can make on this trip please visit the Finland Portfolio on my website at www.jholko.com.

Photograph of the Month October 2022 Arctic Hare in Winter

The photograph of the month for October 2022 comes from my March expedition to Ellesmere Island in Winter (Read the Trip Report) and is of an Arctic Hare in -46º Celsius. Although working and photographing in this sort of extreme cold is never easy, the results can be extremely rewarding. This style of high-key white-on-white wildlife photography is the primary reason I feel so drawn to photographing wildlife in the Arctic. The opportunities for subtle, gentle tonalities in the wildlife, snow, and ice make for superb opportunities that are monochromatic in nature, but highly emotive. In this instance, the Arctic Hare was perfectly positioned, looking into the frame on soft white snow and a clean white background of soft clouds.
