WNPP Episode 125 – Image Storage and Back Up Strategies

I have just published episode 125 of my Wild Nature Photography Podcast. In this episode, I briefly recap the workshop I recently completed for Arctic Fox cubs in the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve in Iceland, and then dive deeper into my thoughts on the current state of image storage and backup in the field, as well as my thoughts on backup strategies for storing hundreds of thousands of precious photographs.

  1. The OneDrive backup is aggressive on Windows. If a folder is set to backup to the cloud, you can’t even use the files until after the initial sync. And if the LRCAT file is on a cloud-sync’d drive, it is not a good user experience.

But when I ran out of drive space I was able to sync all of my files into the cloud, clean them up locally, and download them once I got home. That was actually quite useful. My ISP was probably thrilled with the 540 GB download.

I use cloud backup. I’ve been a user of Backblaze since around 2011 when it was $5/month. In 2017 when my laptop died, I still had files on a fully encrypted drive. This saved me. I didn’t lose any data.

I actually disagree with you on the drives from the same batch. The likelihood that they will all go bad around the same time is too high.
