Photo of the Month May 2020 – Wild Wolf

The photograph of the month for May 2020 comes from my Finland workshop in September last year to photograph Wolves and Wolverines (Read the Trip Report). Photographed from a ground level hide in no mans land between Finland and Russia during the first late Autumn snowfall; this photograph captures for me the very essence of a wild wolf. The gesture with the raised paw and angle of attack of the animals head in combination with the intense glare makes for a powerful and emotive photograph.

By way of a little back story to this photograph – I had actually dragged a small portable ground level hide into this location specifically for the clean and distant forest background in combination with the soft grasses in the foreground. I was then very fortunate to have this young wolf approach within 600mm range just as the first snow was beginning to fall. Finland has very quickly become one of my favourite destinations on the planet for wildlife photography and I am looking forward to returning later this year (assuming we are all able to travel!). I will have a video on the post production of the photograph in Adobe Lightroom in coming days.

Frozen in Time Exhibition New Dates for 2021 – Save the Date!

Last week I wrote about the delay of my upcoming Frozen in Time exhibition as a result of the current COVID-19 lock-down and social isolation measures in place around the world. The exhibition was originally planned to open June 4th this year and run a full month in Melbourne at the Sun Room Gallery at Sun studios in South Melbourne before it travelled to NSW and then onto the United States.

I am excited to announce today that new dates for the exhibition have now been confirmed for next year 2021. The exhibition will open as planned at the Sun Room at Sun Studios in Melbourne on the 4th of June 2021 and will run a full month in Melbourne, Victoria before it travels onward to New South Wales. The exhibition will still include approximately three dozen of my photographs from both the Arctic and Antarctic captured over a period of ten years.

Frozen in Time Exhibition Delayed Until Further Notice

With the current lock-down and social isolation measures in place around the world as a result of the COVID-19 crisis I have had to make the unfortunate and difficult decision to delay my upcoming Frozen in Time exhibition that was scheduled to open in Melbourne this June. The exhibition was originally planned to open June 4th and run a full month in Melbourne at the Sun Room Gallery at Sun studios in South Melbourne before it travelled to NSW and then onto the United States.

At this stage I am planning to delay the exhibition until 2021 and will announce new dates as soon as they are confirmed (hopefully in the next couple of months). The exhibition will still include approximately three dozen of my photographs from both the Arctic and Antarctic captured over a period of ten years. The exhibition will be held in South Melbourne as previously planned and unreleased limited edition prints will be available – More details to come soon…

Self Isolation Day Fourteen – Big Brown Bear

Day fourteen of mandatory self isolation (freedom tomorrow!) includes a photograph I made in September last year of a large adult male Brown Bear emerging from the forest on the Finland / Russia Border. I had actually positioned myself in a small portable ground level hide along a game trail where I had seen wolves the evening before in the hope they would come back (they did just before dark). I had not expected this large fellow to come wandering out of the forest! The bear came within just a dozen feet of my hide on his way past which gave me a great opportunity to photograph him with the beautiful soft grasses in the foreground.

The photograph was taken from a small ground level portable hide, hand held with the Canon EOS 1DX MK2 with the Canon 600mm f4L IS MK3 at ISO1600 f5.6 at 1/400th of a second. I will be returning to Finland in September this year to lead another workshop to this amazing location for Wolves, Wolverine and Bears (only two places remaining).

Self Isolation Day Thirteen – Snowy Owl in Snowfall

Day thirteen of mandatory self isolation (Just the rest of today and tomorrow to go!) includes a photograph I made on my last Snowy Owl workshop in January this year (Read the Trip Report). 2020 was a low snow year for our workshop and we had to very much work around the little snow we had. We were fortunate to have one day with light snow fall; which was I felt our most productive and successful day. This photograph works for me both because of the added dimension of the falling snow, but also because of the soft grey trees in the background.
