Canon has released a major firmware update for the EOS 1DX MK3. The update is mostly for videographers who will be very pleased with the new features including Canon Log 3.

Firmware Version 1.5.0 incorporates the following enhancements and fix:
1. Adds [Canon Log 3] to [Canon Log settings]. 
• Support for RAW movies shot with Canon Log 3 and RAW (Light) will be available in a future version of Cinema RAW Development and in Digital Photo Professional software.
• Support for the processing of RAW movies shot with Canon Log 3 and the application of Viewing LUT will be available in a future version of Digital Photo Professional software.
2. Simultaneous movie recording on card 1 and card 2 has been added, however RAW movies and RAW(Light) movies cannot be recorded simultaneously on card 1 and card 2.
3. Support for the VPG 400(Video Performance Guarantee Profile), a standard based on the CFexpress 2.0 specification, has been added.
4. Fixes an issue in which there are rare instances where the shooting settings for Still Photo mode are retained when a user switches to Movie mode.

Firmware Version 1.5.0 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.4.0. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.5.0, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

In case you missed the industry news, the i1Display and i1 Studio devices from X-Rite will now live under the Colour Checker name from Calibrite. The technology is identical and as before all devices are still powered by X-Rite. The branding has changed and there will be more support and education in the market place going forward. Today, X-Rite Incorporated and Calibrite announce their partnership to transition the X-Rite photo and video portfolio to Calibrite, a newly formed company dedicated to servicing the colour management needs of the photo, video, and content creation markets. Calibrite will collaborate with X-Rite on product development and take direct global control of the packaging, distribution, and marketing of X-Rite photo solutions. The new Calibrite suite of products will be powered by X-Rite technology.

Episode Eight – Photograph what you are Passionate About

The photograph of the month for July 2021 comes from my last expedition to photograph Arctic Fox in February of 2020 (Read the Trip Report). This was a fabulous expedition and with the benefit of hindsight probably one of the best Arctic Fox photographic experiences I have ever been fortunate to have and share. It was the combination of co-operative wildlife and the sheer drama of the wild winter weather day-after-day that provided such wonderful and ongoing photographic opportunities.

This particular photograph works for me on multiple levels. The wonderful contrast of the snow sticking to the foxes fur and face (one of the reasons I actually prefer to photograph the blue morph fox in lieu of the generally more sought after white morph). The clean white snow background with the gentle shadow on the snow and the overall shape and gesture of the foxes position. With the foxes tail tucked up there is a very pleasing geometric shape to the fox. Finally, the direct eye connection with the fox adds the much needed viewer connection. Because the shadow under the fox does not extend all the way to the frames edges I was able to tilt the camera slightly and add just a little bit of tension to the frame by offsetting what the eye would otherwise expect to be a perfectly level horizontal line.
