Some time ago, I created a set of ISO Specific Noise Reduction pre-sets for the Canon EOS 1DXMK3 and the Canon EOS R3. These pre-sets have since been downloaded, tested and adopted by many other Canon 1DXMK3 and R3 users as their working defaults. The significant analysis and work invested in creating these was absolutely worthwhile, and the pre-sets have been a great time saver for me and others in the field. A set of pre-sets for the Canon EOS R5 (and now the EOS R5 MK2) has been requested for a long time now. The good news is that I received the new Canon EOS R5 MK2 a week ago and have been busy analysing its RAW files and test chart shots in great detail to create a set of optimised ISO Specific Noise Reduction Pre-sets specific to the R5 MK2. The analysis is almost complete, and for those of you who have written to me (thank you) asking when these might be available, I am pleased to let you know they should be finished in the next few days. The creation of optimised pre-sets takes a considerable amount of time and energy. In addition, I like to work in the mornings when my eyes are at their very best – this means multiple sessions across multiple days to produce the best possible analysis. I will update the blog with a link to purchase and download as soon as possible.

Earlier this year, I ran a small group expedition to eastern Greenland in Winter (Read the Trip Report) in search of dramatic winter landscapes and Arctic wildlife. This was not a trip for the faint of heart as it involved winter camping in temperatures as low as -40º Celsius without facilities or heating. One of the participants, Kevin Hall, recently wrote about his experience on the expedition; the article has now been published by the BBC in the UK. A rare single place (private cabin!) has become available on my Svalbard Winter Explorer expedition in April next year. The expedition will run from April 15th to April 23rd, 2025, in late Winter / early Spring. This time of year is an incredible time to visit Svalbard. The sun is low in the sky, providing hours of glorious golden light. This expedition is for photographers who want to capture powerful and evocative photographs of Arctic wildlife, including polar bears, Arctic foxes, reindeer and walruses, as well as dramatic snow- and ice-covered landscapes in a winter setting. The cusp of Winter is a beautiful time to visit and photograph in Svalbard. At this time of the year the landscape will be wearing its winter armour.
