Arctic Fox Expedition COVID Delay Update 2020

With the ongoing COVID pandemic and the continuing uncertainty surrounding international travel I have taken the decision today to delay the planned 2021 Arctic fox expedition to Northern Iceland until 2022. New dates for the expedition are the 9th – 14th February 2022. A detailed PDF itinerary of the expedition can be downloaded HERE and more details are available on my website. If you would like to get more of an idea what participation in this workshop is like be sure to read this years Trip Report.

For those who are interested in this expedition to the remote north of Iceland to photograph Arctic Fox in a beautiful winter setting I have put together a short Adobe Spark Presentation and Website  with some teaser photographs and some information on the expedition. Of course, more photographs are also available on my website at www.jholko.com.

Canon EOS 1DX MK3 Firmware Update August 2020

Canon has released a firmware update for the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III. The big item of note is the enhancement to AF for improved face and eye recognition at distance. What this means in practice will take some time to ascertain. With the current lock down it is difficult to get out to test.

Firmware Version 1.2.0 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:

  • Enhancements when using Browser Remote:
    • The image list displayed will be refreshed automatically on the browser.
    • On the shooting screen of the browser, you can set the movie resolution and a high frame rate.
    • On the shooting screen of the browser, you can change the movie shooting mode.
    • On the shooting screen of the browser, Live View will be displayed as soon as you select the movie shooting button.
  • Enhances Auto Focus (AF) for improved face and eye recognition at greater distances.
  • Fixes a phenomenon that may occur during viewfinder shooting, in which the shutter may not be released or the camera may not operate in the following settings:
    • In One-Shot AF mode, when the AF Area Selection Mode is set as Zone AF, Large Zone AF or Automatic Selection AF.
    • In AI Servo AF, when direct AF point selection is made using the smart controller.
    • When the Register/Recall Shooting Function is assigned to the AE Lock button, in the Custom Controls.
  • Connectivity during FTP transmission has been improved.
  • Improves Wi-Fi connectivity when using the Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E9.
  • Fixes a phenomenon, in which the card access time may take longer when using certain CFexpress cards.

Post Production Video #2 Adobe Lightroom CC – Mongolia Pallas Cat

Today I am releasing the second in a new series of videos on instructional photographic discussion and post production. These videos are something I have been meaning to to do for quite a while now but due to my extensive travels have not had time to shoot and edit. The silver lining in the current COVID crisis is that I have finally had the time to sit down and start to not only process some of my photographs, but also document the process and explain my post production step-by-step; as well as discuss a little of the back story behind the photographs and my thought process on the capture. If you enjoy this video please drop me a comment and let me know so that I can do more of them. It is my intention to share not only the post production process, but also my thoughts behind the actions as well as additional videos on printing and colour management. It also helps me if you hit the subscribe button in You Tube, which will mean you are always up to date on the latest video.
