Canon EOS R1 Firmware Update November 2025

Canon has today released new firmware for the Canon EOS R1. Unfortunately, (rant warning) they still have not included the capability to bind pre-capture to an assignable button. A year on from the camera’s release, this really isn’t good enough – in fact, it’s borderline unforgivable. Yes, I know you can assign pre-capture to a custom shooting mode, but that is not the same. Even the newly announced Canon EOS R6 MKIII has this capability. At this point, the cynic in me would say that Canon will offer this capability in the EOS R1 MK2 in a few years’ time…. hrm….. Or perhaps I just need more coffee……

Firmware Version 1.2.0 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:
1. Adds support for the EOS Multi Remote, a remote shooting system for professional photographers.
For an overview and specifications of EOS Multi Remote, please refer to the Canon website:
https://ssw.imaging-saas.canon/app/app.html?app=emr
2. Fixes an issue in which image transfers to an FTP server may fail, displaying Err41.
3. Fixes an issue that, in rare instances, may prevent certain CFexpress cards from being formatted in the camera.
4. Improves other system stability.

We have just one single place remaining next year on our October South Eastern Greenland Ice Gems workshop. This is the workshop for you if you have ever wanted to photograph the incredible and awe-inspiring icebergs and landscapes of Greenland, but you don’t want to live aboard a ship or boat. For the duration of this workshop, we will be based in a hotel on shore. We will make daily boat excursions to photograph the icebergs of Greenland, returning each evening to the comfort of our land-based accommodation. Please contact me for further details or to register your interest in this last place.

WNNP Episode 135 Book Review Dark Skys by Jeff Pfaller

I have just published episode 135 of my Wild Nature Photography Podcast. In this episode, I review Jeff Pfaller’s new book, Dark Skies ‘Rare Phenomena in America’s Public Lands‘. This is a wonderfully refreshing take on America’s parks, offering a nighttime perspective on the landscape and the joy of both nighttime photography and evening solitude in America’s national parks. Highly recommended.

Puffins and Razorbills of Grimsey Island Workshop June 2026

In early June next year, 2026, I will be running a workshop on Grimsey Island, north of the Icelandic mainland. This workshop is specifically to photograph Atlantic Puffins and Razorbills (and many other Arctic bird species) that live on the spectacular bird cliffs on this island. This intensive photography workshop will run from the 3rd of June until the 8th of June and is fully inclusive of comfortable and cozy guest house accommodation, food, return car ferry, in-country transfers, photographic instruction – plus, of course, amazing photographic experiences! Early June is the ideal time to visit Grimsey Island, as we have the midnight sun for 24-hour photography. This workshop is limited to a maximum of just six photographers. Please get in touch if you would like to secure a place or would like additional information.

Photograph of the Month November 2025 – Charging White Horses

The photograph of the month for November 2025 comes from my recent workshop in the Camargue region of France, where I photographed the famous white horses. This particular photograph was a slow-shutter-speed frame, shot at 1/10th of a second. This sort of photography is always a bit of a crap shoot, as you definitely miss more than you hit. But everynow and again, when things align a really strong powerful image can result. In this case, despite the horses charging nearly head-on, I was lucky enough to get the lead horse sharp. The combination of soft, warm morning light and splashing water completes the frame. Slow shutter speed images, such as this, really help give still photography a sense of motion, bringing a photograph to life.
